Baptism is for every individual who has repented and placed their life and faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
Olive Drive Church practices and teaches “Believer’s Baptism.”
Believer’s Baptism is a public testimony to God, the church, oneself and the world of the inward regeneration Christ has made through his substitutionary atonement on the cross.
The word baptism (baptizo) means to dip or plunge or immerse. Water baptism is a visual and symbolic demonstration of a person’s union with Christ in the likeness of His death and resurrection. It signifies that his former way of life has been put to death and vividly depicts a person’s release from the mastery of sin. Baptism is not a cleansing ritual that you do again and again.
Baptism is a public step of obedience to Christ. In Matthew 28:19 Jesus commands those who trust their life to him to be baptized in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Before your baptism, we offer a baptism class designed to answer your questions about this ordinance. The class is a discussion of the biblical significance of baptism. The class also covers several frequently asked questions, all logistical details of a baptism service and gives you an opportunity to share your testimony. Once you have taken the class and are affirmed to be ready by the leader who gives the class you are ready to be baptized in one of our upcoming All-Church Quarterly Celebrations or in a specific gathering of believers that has been determined.
To express your readiness/interest to be baptized, please email Pastor Joshua Kirstine.
A Few Specific Clarities:
- All baptism candidates at Olive Drive Church are required to take the Baptism Class prior to their public baptism.
- Attendance at the Baptism Class does not require you to actually be baptized if you are not ready to do so. If you would simply like more information about our beliefs concerning this ordinance or a chance to ask more questions, please feel free to sign-up and attend.
- If, as a believer, you were baptized prior to your attendance at Olive Drive Church, we do not require you to be baptized again, unless your baptism preceded your conversion.
Baptism is something that should be understood and cherished. At Olive Drive Church, we treat the baptism of children with special care and want to help parents of 1st through 5th graders walk with their children through the baptism process. If you have a 1st through 5th grader who is expressing interest in baptism, a special setting is provided to affirm the understanding and readiness of your child.
This special session with one of our Pastors is for the baptism candidate and parent(s). During this session we will talk about the meaning of baptism as well as the right and wrong motivations for being baptized.
This is an opportunity for the child to share their story and for the member of the staff to talk with the parents and the child in order to discern their readiness for baptism. The staff members will either recommend the child for baptism or encourage them to wait for a later season. Parents will be asked to honor the recommendation of the Ministry Staff.
If you think your child is ready to be baptized, please email Family Pastor Jason Taylor.
